Hand Carved Eket Masks - Nigeria

Size: various size 30cm - 40cm round masks (H)

Hand-carved by the Eket people, a subgroup of the Ibibio ethnic group in Nigeria’s Cross River region (Akwa Ibom State). Crafted exclusively by male members of the secretive Ekpo society using tropical such as iroko or mahogany..

These masks are circular or subtly oval in form, the mask features a small, centrally placed heart-shaped or triangular face with narrow eyes, a short nose, and a minimal mouth. Its surface is alive with bold geometric motifs, interlocking triangles, zigzags, concentric circles, and cross-hatching rendered in polychrome pigments of red, black, white, and occasional yellow or blue. The aged patina, earned through ritual use, enhances its authenticity and visual depth. Abstract rather than realistic, the design powerfully symbolizes the sacred union of sun and moon, embodying fertility and cosmic renewal.

Worn during Ekpo society performances at harvest and sowing ceremonies, funerals, and initiation rites, the mask serves as a spiritual conduit. These masquerades invoke prosperity, ensure agricultural success, reinforce community harmony, and mark life’s pivotal transitions, birth, marriage, and death.

Though less renowned than Baule or Dan masks, the Eket sun-moon mask profoundly influenced 20th-century abstract artists, including Picasso and Modigliani. Prized by collectors for its rarity, geometric precision, and spiritual resonance, it remains a testament to Ibibio artistic genius and enduring cultural tradition.

All sizes listed are approximate. The African Eket Mask you purchase and receive may differ just slightly in size, look, and/or color from the African Eket Mask shown in the picture because each African Eket Mask is hand carved and hand painted by individual artists. No two masks are exactly the same.
